What Is Metvix Photodynamic Treatment?

Metvix Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) uses a topical medication called Metvix that is selectively absorbed by abnormal skin cells. Once activated by a specific light source, the treated cells are destroyed from within, helping clear damaged or precancerous tissue with excellent cosmetic outcomes.

How Metvix PDT Works

How Metvix PDT Works

The Metvix cream is applied directly to the affected area and allowed to absorb into abnormal cells. After an incubation period, the area is exposed to a controlled light source. This activates the medication, destroying targeted cells while minimizing damage to healthy skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

faq

Most side effects are temporary and may include redness, swelling, crusting, itching, or a burning sensation. In rare cases, skin discoloration or infection may occur. Your provider will review all risks during your consultation.

After Metvix PDT, the treated area will be sensitive and should be protected from sunlight. Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 48 hours and follow your provider’s instructions for gentle cleansing and moisturizing. Redness, peeling, and crusting are normal and should be left to heal naturally. Avoid picking or scrubbing the area, and pause harsh skincare products until healing is complete.

The Metvix cream is fully covered by most private insurance companies.

The procedure itself is painless for patients. At the end of the three hours, patients wash the area very well with gentle soap and water. Over the next few days, patients can expect a “gentle” reaction that may feel like a sunburn. In some instances, patients have a “brisk reaction,” and may develop small crusty areas. For best results, the treatment is repeated again in two weeks, and then once a year for maintenance of more youthful-looking skin.
